Implant Treatment

Am I too Old for Dental Implants?

Apr 17 • 2 minute read

Unfortunately, it grows easier and easier for teeth to fall out as we age. While traditional bridges and dentures can alleviate the symptoms of tooth loss, they don’t adequately treat the problem. Dental implants, however, are affixed to the bone and replace the entire tooth, from root to crown.

All seniors should consider dental implant treatment, especially if they wish to have a smile that functions naturally. Ability to receive implants is not based on age, but rather your oral health. The following oral structures need to have stable health to undergo implant placement and restoration:

Bone

After teeth are lost the jaw begins to lose strength and volume, specifically in areas where teeth used to be. The root, once attached to the bone, leaves an empty socket that is slowly filled with bone tissue. The bone that fills the space is not new growth but is the surrounding tissue moving to fill the space. As the bone shifts in the socket, it draws in teeth as well, contributing to misalignment and gaps between them.

Ideally, implants should be placed immediately after tooth loss. This prevents resorption, misalignment, and additional aesthetic impact. When seniors are looking to obtain implants, their jaw health is a determining factor. Even if their jaw is too thin to properly bond with implants, periodontists can utilize bone graft procedures to rebuild strength and resilience. These preparatory treatments help make many senior patients good candidates for this advanced treatment.

Gums

Gingival health is essential for implants to be placed successfully. Periodontitis is prevalent in seniors who do not practice proper hygiene activities and may have caused tooth loss in the first place. This gum infection will need to be treated before implants can be introduced, and these procedures typically involve deep cleanings and routine care. More intensive treatments may be necessary if gum disease is spreading to healthy teeth, or impacting bone health. Restoring stability to the gums will improve oral health overall, reduce instances of decay, and make your breath smell fresh.
